When I read the Bible and hear about how God hates idolatry, I immediately think of those small images that people make, publicly set up as ‘gods’ and actually bow to them. Yuck, I think.
Thanks to Chinua Achebe, Nollywood and the ‘Mount Zion Faith Ministeries’, idols have come to include pictures of ‘chalk-painted-eye-priests’ and ‘trees-with-a-single-white-cloth-wrapped-around-trunk’ and ‘middle-of-the-night-sacrifices’. Scary, i think.
So now, my definition of idols are a cross between ‘Yucky’ and ‘Scary’. (And ridiculous. And outdated)
So when the Bible says ‘Flee idolatry’, I’m immediately skipping over that part like ‘You dont even have to tell me, Lord. I am so with you on this. The Holy Spirit doesn’t have work in this department.
But of course, God doesn’t just let me be, with my fake halo and wings.
What of that television series that cannot be touched?
Early in the morning- who do you reach out to first- me or your phone?
Do you shift things around to make room for me? Or do you shift me around to make room for things?
By now, I’m definitely no longer comfortable but there’re many other idols I’ve been playing with and ignoring.
What of your need to please others and be accepted versus pleasing God?
What of that plan for revenge that God should just ‘forget about telling you anything about?’
Let me bring out the big guns
How many times do you honor and quote your pastor more than you honor and quote the Bible?
I could go on. An idol is simply anything that would “threaten” God’s place in your life at any given point. Anything at all. You fill in the blanks. And God hates it.
I am the Lord: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.
King James Version
But how do I stop putting things I see with my eyes over the God that I dont immediately see?
Not just the love of ‘God is doing so much in my life right now- I love Him, I love Him, I love Him’. But also the love of commitment- I love Him because He first loved me.
The only way to love Him is to read His Word and ask the Holy Spirit’s help to enable us do them.
Things are constantly battling for our attention and devotion. Let’s not be ignorant of how subtlely the enemy can have us kneeling and groveling before a phone. Or a laptop. Or a tv screen…
