Infact, if for any reason you dont know the meaning of this word, I refuse to tell you. Go look it up. We’ll wait till you get back.

Okay, okay. Just because you are otherwise awesome, amnesia means memory loss.

It’s not just forgetting something- it is the inability to remember. Basically it is a medical condition and stems from some degree or type of brain damage.

Just for the fun of it, I’ll throw in a little bit of trivia. The brain has a memory centre. And an intelligence centre. And a personality centre. And a heart regulation centre. And a whole lot of plenty other centres. Not all parts of the brain is for thinking. (If you didnt know this, you can thank me later)

From the medical point of view, no one wants  to have amnesia. Because no one wants to have brain damage.

But dont we all have things in our past that we wish we could totally erase from our memories? And not just things that have actually happened to us. Sometimes, I have heard stories so horrific that I wish I could ‘unhear’ them. Just wipe them out totally. Delete, empty the recycle bin and format the hard disk.

A little more complex is the fact that we even have a conscious and an unconscious memory. Because we are not actively thinking of something does not mean we have forgotten. And it does not mean we are not constantly basing our life decisions on those memories we dont even know we are thinking about- sort of like a background program, running on our computers.

Our memories hold our individual stories. But sometimes, some parts of those stories are best erased.

I started writing this, to talk about God and how He completely has amnesia, when it comes to our sins, once we come under the blood of Jesus. Which is totally true.

But maybe we should talk about those real, dark places of our lives- places of hurt, anger, personal failures, disappointments, sometimes even horror- that we wish we could forget. But they stay, running as background programmes, keeping us from the true fullness of life that is supposed to be ours

If we claim we are free of sin, we’re only fooling ourselves. A claim lie that is errant nonsense

1 John1:8 (The Message Bible)

Sin, is simply anything that is not God’s Will for our lives. We probably know, from experience, that pretending that it didnt happen does not help much. It happened.

Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy-laden and overburdened, and I will cause you to rest (I will ease and relieve and refresh your souls)

Matthew 11:28 (The Amplified Bible)

You do this by faith. Talking repeatedly to just anybody about it, might deal with smaller things. But for the really heavy things, you dont just need someone that’ll share it and bear it with you, you need someone to bear it FOR you.

‘With your whole being, you embrace God setting things right, and then you say it, right out loud “God has set everything right between me and Him”

Romans 10:9-10 (The Message Bible translation)

When God takes it, He TAKES IT. Your mind and the devil try to show you the pain and tell you its still there with you. Instead of re-confessing those dark things, say right out loud what God has done for you.

“Oh death, where is your sting?’

I Cor 15:55

A part of us knows we can’t will ourselves to forget something. What we really want is not actually amnesia- we want the power of a particular memory to hurt or control us, gone.

We want to be able to say “It happened to me, but it is not happening anymore. I am not a continuous victim of the memory of it’

And we can have that. Through faith in what God promises us is possible.
